“Something up?” Honora asked.

The gold iris rotated in his eye socket. “I don’t see anything.”

“What’s up with the night vision?” she asked, but the wizard was done resting.

“I’ve got work to do.” He dropped his handful of seed and leapt off his perch, plummeting to the ground below in a drop dive.

“Whoa!” That guy’s crazy.

Her curiosity about this flyer was piqued, and she wasn’t convinced he didn’t know something about the area and its occupants that could help her search. Honora dove after him, but kept her distance, flying a few feet above the hovercraft lane. He coasted to the ground, ending up in an alley perpendicular to the street she was watching, and then he shot back up into the air, whizzing right by her.

“What are you doing?” she asked, cautiously drifting toward him and setting down on the ground. Fliers could be eccentric and she’d met her fair share of daredevils who loved to take risk in the air.

He touched down beside her. “Testing new gear for flying.” He showed her a charmed chest plate under his jacket. “It’s a new product for making quick stops and sharp turns.”

“That’s your job?” she asked. That explained his erratic flying. He probably came to this part of town because his strange behavior wouldn’t be noticed and no one would bother him.
